Hungry Like the Wolf
GUEST BLOG by Sommer Marsden
One of the fun things about writing werewolves is there big appetites. Not just for sex, I mean, I'll cop to the fact that there is sex and sex and more sex in my book BIG BAD. Werewolves did their sex. And it's hungry raw sex not aloof sensual sex like most vamps (or the ones I write, anyway). But the huge consumption of nookie is only part of the appetite. They are also eating machines. They have the metabolism of lumberjacks on crack. To me, that's a huge part of the fun of writing weres. While working on Big Bad, I would often feed Ellis whatever I was craving. Whatever I wished I had to eat in front of me, I fed to him.
Poor Tyler only got some beverages, one rare steak, I think and some blood. I did satisfy his sexual appetite, don't worry about Tyler. But as far as food, he got the short end of the stick. But Ellis...well, Ellis and Ruby's new (read present) love started off due to a sausage run to Ruby's store. He came in craving meat and left with her craving him. Their first real sexual encounter started with yet more sausage, cooked in Ruby's tiny apartment while she tried to control her urge to be with him. And...yes, possibly I have a thing for sausage (save your jokes) since even the snippet below takes place in a diner where Ellis is stealing Ruby's breakfast--including sausage.
It's fun to feed your characters what you crave. The only downside was I ate a lot of what I described in Big Bad because I made myself hungry. I also had an increased appetite in...other areas, if you get my not so subtle drift. And yes, I ate a lot of sausage. Hey, feel free to take that however you like.
I have a copy of Big Bad to give away to a commenter so stop in and say hi. I have multiple formats available, so I should be able to make any ereader happy.
Now if you'll excuse me, I have a hankering for a cinnamon roll for some reason. And maybe a side of sausage.
XOXO

Samuel studied Ellis with amazement and amusement. Sort of how I felt when I looked at him. “Your history together is tragic. And joyous,” he added.
Ellis nodded. “You can say that again.”
“Hey, I died,” I said.
“But he had to live without you. I think those who lose loved ones are the worst off.”
I’d never really thought of it that way. I tried to swallow but there was a big wad of emotion in my throat.
Ellis stopped eating and looked at me. He looked ridiculous, dirty and huge in the borrowed chef’s whites. “He’s right,” he said to me softly. “It killed me losing you once. It almost killed me thinking I’d lose you again. And I’ll eat broken glass before I’ll let anyone hurt you again. Even if that means chasing you through the mud and the rain up the beltway in your ugly old car.”
“Hey!”
He grinned at me and when Roberta set a new plate down in front of me, Ellis pulled it in front of him and started eating. Roberta laughed. “More coffee?”
I nodded, eating the cinnamon bun before Ellis could swipe it.
Samuel slid his cup over for her to fill and I thought how odd it was. This impromptu gathering that nearly felt like family.“Don’t worry. You were supposed to come here. We were due to meet,” he said as if reading my mind.
I had a flash of Frank in my head. His joy at taking my life. His thirst for vengeance barely slaked. His darkness as big and powerful as Ellis’s light. For all of Ellis’s bark, for all of his seriousness, he was good right down to the root of himself.
He put his hand on my thigh under the table and squeezed. It was as intimate as a kiss, as staggering as penetration. I loved him.
“I—“
“She’s adjusting,” Ellis said to Samuel. “I just want to know if the crystal ball in your head says anything about what we need to do.”
Samuel laughed but said “Go to the Eastern Pack. The alpha is dying. Your mate is here…” He cocked his head in that weird dog listening to something posture.
“Why? Why am I here again? Why is this happening?” It was my one big question. It was the thing that had taken root in my chest, sinking its claws deep, refusing to let go.
Samuel sipped his coffee, patted his big belly and grinned. “Ellis did what was right last time. He had a very hard decision to make. And he did something a lot of us could not do. Especially those with a base nature that is wild and untamed.”
I waited, Ellis’s hand still on my leg gripping me just a hair tighter.
“But he managed, for the good of the supernaturals. As impossible as it probably seemed, he tamed that part of himself and did the right thing. You’ve heard that phrase Karma’s a bitch?”
“Yes.”
“She’s also a benefactor,” he said. “Ellis is being rewarded.”
I was a reward?
Lust according to Ruby:
You read those books where they explain it all away. They make it fine with rationalization. But what if I just want to? What if that's my whole reason? My life is not a romance novel. I don’t need justification. I’m a grown woman who knows what she wants.
I want Ellis. And I want Tyler.
And I won’t apologize...
What’s worse than wanting both your best friend who’s a vampire and the just-back-in-town alpha werewolf you find yourself fixated on? Finding out that the werewolf in question wants you, too. But he isn’t too keen on the sharing part. Oh, and by the way, you’re his dead mate.
Okay, okay, dead is harsh—reincarnated.
What’s worse than that? Realizing that you believe the whole crazy tale of reincarnation. Because it seems to be true.
And yet you still want them both—together. Vampire and werewolf and you in the middle. Stuck between two predators who want you and only you. To complicate it all, you find out that you can have it. With your new/old mate’s blessing. But just one time before he claims you as his.
Are you brave enough to take it? That one shot?
Well...Are you?
